I'll bet you have. I found this on Alison's blog and thought I would pass it on. The National Endowment for the Arts apparently believes that the Average American has only read six books from the list below. Maybe so, but I think most of the people I know have read more than six. Feel free to leave a comment with the number that you've read and your favorites. And if you'd like, you can follow these directions too:
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline (or mark in a different color) the books you LOVE
4) Reprint this list in your blog so we can try and track down these people who’ve read 6 and force books upon them ;-)

I've read 43. I guess being a Humanities/English major in college helped, but still, I read a lot of them of my own volition. Interesting post!
I question the order of these books. Why, for example, is Pride and Prejudice first, while The Lord of the Rings is second? Granted, P&P is good. I'm just sayin'.
That is a great question, Bart. Aaron says the list was written by a woman because of the number of "girly" or Jane Austen books included. It would be interesting to see a men vs. women breakdown on the number of books read. I've actually read more of these than Aaron and normally I would say that he is much more well-read than myself.

Two of my favorites would be "Gone with the Wind" and "Time-Traveler's Wife"!
I have read about 25 of them. Man, I need to get reading! I think they left some out though, A tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Sun Also Rises, Moby Dick, The last Mohican,The Sound and the Fury, so many great books so why are they not on the list? So many books, so little time.
I heart the Great Gatsby! Just so you know.
For the record 26 books out of this girly list. I do think it has a slight female (or guys who like girly book) leaning, but a lot of the books are really good too. I put my specifics up on my media blog if you want to see which I've read.
Even if biased, interesting nonetheless. Tyler 14, Chelsea 27. But that's just about right in line w/ how much more reading Chelsea does than me.
I have read 11 and Hope read 10. Of course if you've read the complete works of Shakespere, you will have read Hamlet giving a double book bonus. Pretty cheap!
Aaron's Aunt Lynn has read sixty something of them. Impressive!
